Every week we get WhatsApp messages from devotees in the US, Dubai and Singapore asking the same thing: “We land in Chennai next month — how do we fit in Tirumala darshan without wasting two days?” This guide is the answer we usually type out, written down properly. It covers flights, ground transfer, rooms, and which darshan option actually makes sense when your India trip is short.
Which airport should you fly into?
Tirupati has its own airport (TIR), but international connections are limited, so most overseas devotees route through one of two gateways:
- Chennai (MAA) — the practical choice. Around 135 km from Tirupati; a prepaid cab takes 3 to 3.5 hours on a good road. Direct flights from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Dubai, Doha, Colombo and London.
- Bengaluru (BLR) — around 250 km, 5 to 6 hours by road.
- Hyderabad(HYD) — around 600 km, 10 to 12 hours by road.
If you can get a same-day connection to Tirupati airport, take it — but do not build a tight plan around it, because the domestic leg is the first thing that gets rescheduled.
Pick your darshan option before you book anything else
This is where most overseas trips go wrong — families book flights first and then discover the darshan they wanted is not available for their dates.
- NRI Darshan — TTD has a darshan provision specifically for devotees holding foreign passports. We keep the current procedure, timings and what to carry updated on our NRI darshan at Tirumala page — read that before you decide.
- Important Note : NRI Darshan might be cancelled on some special days. Check with TTD helpline by calling 155257 before arrival.
- Special Entry Darshan (Rs.300) — the standard choice for a short trip. Tickets are released on the official TTD portal roughly three months ahead, and gets sold out within minutes. Book the moment your travel dates are firm — full steps are in our Tirupati darshan guide.
- Slotted Sarva Darshan (SSD) — possible, but waiting time swings from 4 hours to 6 hours depending on the season. You have to come and collect tokens 1 day before. Check this SSD Tokens Counters Page for more information.
- Sarva (free) darshan — possible, but waiting time swings from 8 hours to 18+ hours depending on the season. If you are jet-lagged with elders or children, this is a hard day. Check the live situation on our Tirumala crowd status page before committing.
All official bookings happen only on the TTD portal at ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in — no agent, WhatsApp seller or third-party site can sell you a genuine darshan ticket. Dont loose your hard earned money by approaching a random contact found on internet.
The portal accepts credit card, debit card, UPI and net banking. Many overseas devotees book successfully with an international Visa or Mastercard, but the gateway can be inconsistent with foreign-issued cards. If your card is declined, the reliable workaround is to have a family member in India complete the payment on your behalf using an Indian card or UPI — the booking itself just needs the pilgrim names and ID details to be correct, not the payer’s identity. We would suggest to keep Indian cards or UPI ready to have a smooth payment process.
Where to stay: Tirupati first, then the hill
For a first trip from abroad, we suggest staying in Tirupati town the night you arrive, and going up the hill fresh the next morning. TTD’s own complexes — Srinivasam, Vishnu Nivasam and Madhavam — are clean, secure and walkable from the railway station. On the hill, TTD rooms are harder to get; our Tirumala room booking guide explains the release schedule and realistic alternatives, and private hotels in Tirupati can be compared on the booking box on that page.
A sequence that works (2 nights, 3 days)
- Day 1: Land in Chennai, cab to Tirupati, check in, evening darshan of Sri Padmavathi Ammavari at Tiruchanur — many families take Ammavari’s darshan first before going up to Tirumala.
- Day 2: Early morning up the ghat road. As tradition asks, take darshan of Sri Bhu Varaha Swamy at the Pushkarini first, then your booked Venkateswara Swamy darshan. Evening: laddu counters, a calm pradakshina of the mada streets.
- Day 3: Come down, keep a buffer of at least 6 hours before any international flight out of Chennai — ghat road plus highway delays are normal, not exceptional.
FAQ
Can I book darshan tickets before my visa/OCI paperwork is final?
Yes — darshan booking needs an ID you will carry on the day, not a finished visa file. For Rs.300 Special Entry Darshan, your passport ID is sufficient at the queue. If you’re going through NRI Darshan specifically, OCI cardholders need to carry both the OCI card and the passport together — one without the other isn’t accepted. Ensure that your passport number wont change after booking darshan tickets.
Is there a ₹10,000 NRI darshan ticket?
No — this is a common mix-up. The NRI Darshan ticket through VQC-1 costs Rs.300, the same as Special Entry Darshan. If you’ve seen a higher price quoted somewhere, it’s likely for a private tour package that bundles other services like transport , accommodation, not an official TTD ticket tier. Book only on the official portal to avoid overpaying.
There is another ticket called as SRIVANI VIP Break darshan ticket. Its cost is Rs. 10,500 per person. Most NRI’s prefer this as its affordable for them.
Dont mix up the Special Entry Darshan ticket with VIP
Is three months really the booking horizon?
For Rs.300 Special Entry Darshan, yes — quota opens roughly three months ahead on the TTD portal. Festival windows (Brahmotsavams, Vaikunta Ekadashi) disappear fastest.
Can my parents in India book on my behalf?
Yes, the booking account holder does not need to be the pilgrim. Names and ID numbers of everyone taking darshan must be entered correctly — they are checked.
What should we do if we could not get any advance ticket?
Read our darshan without advance booking page first, and keep a full free day for it.
