Muruga is special to the Tamils. The god of beauty, wisdom and courage is associated with the Tamil language and is adored by Tamil poets. Most Murugan devotees undertake a pilgrimage to the six sacred Arupadaiveedu Temples.

Arupadaiveedu or six garrison abodes of Muruga are all located on hilly terrain. While all the kshetras were not battlefields for Murugan devotees padaiveedu actually refers to the constant war between good and evil and Muruga as the supreme vanquisher. These shrines follow the list in poet Nakkeerar’s epic, Thirumugatrupadai. They are as follows
