Tirumala Packing Checklist

 Tirumala temple has firm rules about electronics, the deposit counters, and one missing ID card can undo a booking you fought for three months ago. Here’s the checklist we share with every family that asks us — documents first, because they matter most.

Documents — Don’t Board Without These

• The original photo ID used at booking, for every pilgrim named on the ticket. Names must match. A photocopy or phone screenshot of the ID is not accepted at verification.
• Aadhaar cards for everyone if you’re planning SSD tokens — they’re mandatory at the counter. Details in our SSD token guide.
• A printout of your darshan ticket and room confirmation. Phones get deposited before the queue, so take a printout and bring it.

Clothes

Traditional wear is required for darshan — dhoti or kurta-pyjama for men, saree, half-saree or churidar for women. One set is enough if you’re doing a single darshan; carry it separately so it stays fresh. The full rules, with what’s accepted and what’s turned away, are in our dress code guide. Tirumala sits at altitude and turns genuinely cold on winter nights — better to bring a shawl or light sweater during November to February.

If You’re Trekking Up

For the Alipiri footpath (or the shorter Srivari Mettu):

• Comfortable footwear for the climb — you won’t carry it into the temple anyway. Pilgrims also walk on bare-foot.
• A small water bottle; there are refreshment points along the way
• Glucose or electrolyte sachets, especially in summer
• A cap for the open stretches

You don’t need to haul your luggage up the steps — hand it over at the free luggage counter at the start of the path and collect it in Tirumala. Ask at the Alipiri toll gate area for the counter.

What’s NOT Allowed

• Mobile phones, cameras, smartwatches and all electronics — banned in the darshan queue and inside the temple. This is enforced strictly.
• Footwear — deposited before the temple area, as at any temple.
• Non-Veg, Tobacco and alcohol — prohibited everywhere in Tirumala, not just the temple.
• Large bags in the queue — only what fits in your hands, really.

How the Deposit Counters Work

TTD runs free deposit counters near the queue complex and temple entrances — one set for phones and small valuables, cloak rooms for bags, and stands for footwear. You hand the item over, get a token, and reclaim with the same token after darshan. There is no charge. Two practical tips from experience: photograph nothing — just remember to keep your receipt safe — and deposit everything before joining the queue, not after you’re in line and get turned back. If your room is in Tirumala, the simplest move is to leave everything at the room and walk to the queue with just your ID, ticket and token money.

Health & Comfort

• Regular medicines in a small labelled pouch (allowed in the queue — tell the security staff)
• Basic strip of paracetamol and ORS
• For the queue: patience more than anything — TTD serves refreshments in the compartments during long waits

Money

UPI works at most shops and counters in Tirumala these days, but keep ₹500–1,000 in small notes for prasadam counters, bus tickets and the odd shop that’s offline. Nothing more is needed — Tirumala is not an expensive place.
