Best Temples to Visit In and Around Tirupati 2026 – 19 Must-See Shrines with Timings & Travel Tips

best temples to visit in and around tirupati

Tirupati is one of the most temple-rich regions in India. Within the town itself, you have half a dozen important shrines. Go 50–100 km out and you hit Srikalahasti, Kanipakam, Vontimitta. Push further — 140 to 220 km — and you’re in Kanchipuram, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai. This guide covers 19 temples worth visiting, arranged by distance, so you can plan your trip without backtracking.

Temples In and Around Tirupati Town (Within 100 km)

1. Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple – Tiruchanur

Distance from Tirupati: 5 km | Timings: 6 AM – 8 PM (break 1–3 PM)

Most pilgrims visit Tiruchanur before Tirumala — it’s not just tradition, it makes devotional sense. Goddess Padmavathi (Sri Lakshmi) is the consort of Lord Venkateswara, and the belief is that the Lord’s blessings are more complete when you’ve already sought her grace. The temple is managed by TTD and sees enormous crowds daily, especially on weekends. The main deity seated on a golden lotus, decked in gold ornaments, is genuinely stunning. Keep 1.5 to 2 hours for a comfortable visit.

How to reach: APSRTC city bus from Tirupati Central Bus Stand (15 min). Auto from railway station (₹50–70).

2. Sri Govindaraja Swamy Temple – Tirupati

Distance from Tirupati Railway Station: 1.5 km | Timings: 5 AM – 9:30 PM (break 1–3 PM)

The most prominent temple in Tirupati town. Lord Govindaraja, the elder brother of Lord Venkateswara, rests in a rare reclining (Sayana) posture. The temple was consecrated by Saint Ramanujacharya around 1130 AD, and the towering gopuram dominates the town skyline. Entry is free. It’s a 10-minute walk from the railway station, so there’s no excuse to skip it. If you’re catching an evening train, this is perfect for a quick one-hour visit.

How to reach: 10-minute walk from Tirupati Railway Station. See the full guide to Govindaraja Swamy Temple.

3. Sri Kalyana Venkateswara Swamy Temple – Srinivasa Mangapuram

Distance from Tirupati: 12 km | Timings: 5 AM – 9 PM

This is where tradition says Lord Venkateswara married Goddess Padmavathi. Pilgrims who want to witness or participate in a Kalyanotsavam (divine wedding ceremony) come here — it’s far easier to attend than the version at Tirumala. The annual Brahmotsavam here re-enacts the divine wedding over several days and draws large crowds from across AP and Tamil Nadu. The temple sits at the foothills in a calm setting, which makes it a pleasant contrast to the busy town temples.

How to reach: APSRTC bus from Tirupati towards Chittoor road (30 min). Auto from Tirupati (₹150–200).

4. Sri Kapila Theertham Temple – Tirupati

Distance from Tirupati: 3 km | Timings: 6 AM – 12:30 PM, 4 PM – 8 PM

The only major Shaivite temple at the foothills of Tirumala, dedicated to Lord Shiva as Kapileswara. What makes it special is a natural waterfall that flows year-round directly inside the temple complex — pilgrims take a holy dip in the Kapila Theertham tank before darshan. It sits right at the base of the Alipiri walking path, so pilgrims doing the padayatra naturally pass through. Maha Shivaratri celebrations here are one of the best in the region.

How to reach: Auto from Tirupati (₹60–80). Near Alipiri. See the full guide to Kapila Theertham.

5. ISKCON Temple – Tirupati

Distance from Tirupati: 2 km | Timings: 4:30 AM – 8:30 PM

A modern, well-maintained Krishna temple that offers a noticeably calm experience. Clean, organised, no queues — a good option when you want darshan without the crowds. The architecture is attractive and the prasadam is excellent. Families with young children particularly appreciate how relaxed the atmosphere is compared to the busier temples. Free entry.

How to reach: Auto or city bus from Tirupati (₹40–60).

6. Sri Kalahasti Temple – Sri Kalahasti

Distance from Tirupati: 38 km | Timings: 6 AM – 8 PM

One of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams — the five temples representing the five elements — this one representing Vayu (air). Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it draws thousands specifically for the Rahu-Ketu Pooja, a powerful ritual believed to neutralise the astrological effects of the shadow planets. The pooja runs multiple times daily and is conducted by priests in the traditional Agamic manner. The temple itself is built in Vijayanagara style on the banks of the Swarnamukhi River, worth seeing independent of the pooja. Plan a full half-day here.

How to reach: Frequent APSRTC buses from Tirupati (1 hour). Cab (₹600–800 one way). See the full guide to Sri Kalahasti.

7. Kanipakam Sri Varasiddhi Vinayaka Swamy Temple – Kanipakam

Distance from Tirupati: 60 km | Timings: 4 AM – 9:30 PM

One of the most powerful Vinayaka shrines in South India. The swayambhu (self-manifested) idol is believed to be still growing — an armour donated decades ago no longer fits the deity. The origin story is remarkable: the idol emerged from a well during excavation by three disabled brothers, all of whom were miraculously cured. The spring water (theertham) here is considered to have healing properties. Best visited on Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Vinayaka Chaturthi when the energy in the temple is particularly strong.

How to reach: Bus or train to Chittoor (45 min), then bus/auto to Kanipakam (12 km). See the full guide to Kanipakam Temple.

8. Sri Kalyana Venkateswara Swamy Temple – Narayanavanam

Distance from Tirupati: 33 km | Timings: 6 AM – 12 PM, 3 PM – 8 PM

Another divine wedding kshetra, similar in significance to Srinivasa Mangapuram. The annual Brahmotsavam celebrating Lord Venkateswara’s marriage draws large crowds but the temple is peaceful for most of the year. Newly married couples make a specific trip here to seek blessings for their marriage. The serene surroundings and relaxed pace make it a pleasant detour on the way back from Kanipakam.

How to reach: Direct bus from Tirupati bus stand (1 hour). Cab (₹700–1,000). See the full guide to Narayanavanam.

9. Sri Vedanarayana Swamy Temple – Nagalapuram

Distance from Tirupati: 55 km | Timings: 6 AM – 6 PM

An ancient Vishnu temple inside a dense forest reserve, with a natural stream flowing beside the complex. It’s best paired with the Nagalapuram waterfalls nearby, making it a good nature-plus-pilgrimage day trip. The forest setting means you’ll need to pay a small entry fee at the check post. Far less commercial than most temples on this list — if you want a quiet, genuine experience away from tourist infrastructure, this delivers.

How to reach: Cab from Tirupati recommended (1.5 hours). Limited public transport to the forest area.

10. Sri Venugopala Swamy Temple – Karveti Nagaram

Distance from Tirupati: 78 km | Timings: 6 AM – 8 PM

A significant Vaishnava temple dedicated to Lord Krishna as Venugopala — the flute-playing form. The Rathotsavam (chariot festival) draws devotees from across AP and Tamil Nadu. The temple town itself has a traditional, unhurried feel that’s increasingly rare. A good stop if you’re already heading in the direction of Kanchipuram.

How to reach: Bus from Tirupati towards Kanchipuram direction (2 hours). Cab (₹1,200–1,500).

11. Sri Prasanna Venkateswara Swamy Temple – Appalayagunta

Distance from Tirupati: 35 km | Timings: 6 AM – 12 PM, 3 PM – 8 PM

The Lord here appears in a smiling (Prasanna) posture — a striking contrast to the more austere expression at Tirumala. Devotees who believe this gentle, approachable form to be especially auspicious for happy occasions — marriages, childbirth, new beginnings — visit specifically for that blessing. Smaller crowds, no rush, and a genuinely intimate darshan experience.

How to reach: APSRTC bus from Tirupati (1 hour). Cab (₹800–1,000).

12. Vontimitta Kodandarama Swamy Temple – Vontimitta

Distance from Tirupati: 100 km | Timings: 6 AM – 12 PM, 3 PM – 8 PM

One of the finest surviving examples of Vijayanagara architecture, built in the 15th century — and uniquely, without a gopuram (entrance tower). Dedicated to Lord Rama, the annual Sri Rama Kalyanam here draws hundreds of thousands of devotees and is one of the grandest Ram Navami celebrations in South India. The temple complex is remarkably well-preserved and the craftsmanship on the mandapam pillars is worth a slow, careful look.

How to reach: Bus from Tirupati via Cuddapah direction (2.5 hours). Cab (₹1,800–2,200). See the full guide to Vontimitta Temple.

13. Sri Gangamma Temple – Tirupati

Distance from Tirupati: 0.5 km from Railway Station | Timings: 6 AM – 8 PM

The presiding deity of Tirupati city. Sri Gangamma is not a TTD-managed Vaishnava shrine — she’s a powerful folk goddess, and her annual Jatara held in April–May is one of the most vibrant, colour-drenched festivals in this part of India. The temple itself is small but the significance is immense for locals. Worth 15–20 minutes of any pilgrim’s time.

How to reach: 5-minute walk from Tirupati Railway Station.

14. Talakona Waterfalls – Sri Venkateswara National Park

Distance from Tirupati: 50 km | Open: 8 AM – 5 PM (forest entry)

Andhra Pradesh’s highest waterfall at 270 feet, set inside Sri Venkateswara National Park. There’s a small Shiva temple near the falls and the stream water — said to carry medicinal herbs from the forest — has a local reputation for healing. The 1.5 km forest trek to reach the falls is easy and genuinely enjoyable. Go between October and January when the falls are at full flow. Pack a change of clothes if you’re planning to wade in.

How to reach: Cab from Tirupati (1.5 hours). Forest entry fee applies. See the full guide to Talakona.

15. Sri Kodandarama Swamy Temple – Tirupati

Distance from Tirupati: 3 km | Timings: 6 AM – 8 PM

A graceful, relatively peaceful Rama temple in the town. Dedicated to Lord Kodandarama — Rama holding the Kodanda bow — it’s an elegant Dravidian structure without the overcrowding of the larger town temples. Good for Sri Rama Navami. If you’ve been going at Tirumala pace for two days and want a quiet half-hour darshan in town, this is the place.

How to reach: Auto from Tirupati Railway Station (₹50–70), or a 20-minute walk.

Extended Pilgrimage Circuit (100–220 km from Tirupati)

These four temples are a longer journey but pilgrims routinely combine them with a Tirupati trip. Each is a major shrine in its own right and the distances are manageable — most are under 4 hours from Tirupati by road.

16. Subramanya Swamy Temple – Tiruttani

Distance from Tirupati: ~90 km | Timings: 5:30 AM – 9 PM

One of the six sacred abodes of Lord Murugan (Aarupadai Veedu), situated on a 365-step hill. Tiruttani Murugan is especially revered in Tamil Nadu and among Telugu devotees for fulfilling vows — the most common being tonsure (head shaving), which pilgrims offer here after prayers are answered. The presiding deity is Subramanya Swamy, believed to have defeated the demon Soorapadman at this spot. The climb up 365 steps takes about 20–30 minutes at a comfortable pace; there’s also a vehicle road. Best visited on Skanda Sashti or Karthigai Deepam.

How to reach: Train from Tirupati to Tiruttani (2 hours, direct trains available). Bus (2.5 hours). Cab (₹1,500–1,800 one way).

17. Kanchipuram Temple Circuit

Distance from Tirupati: ~140 km | Plan for: Full day

Kanchipuram is one of the seven sacred cities of Hinduism and easily warrants a full day. The three temples most pilgrims prioritise:

  • Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple — One of the 108 Divya Desams; the presiding Vishnu deity here is famous for granting boons (vara). The temple is enormous and the main deity, Devaraja Perumal, is magnificent.
  • Sri Kamakshi Amman Temple — One of the three most powerful Shakti peethas in South India, along with Madurai Meenakshi and Tirunelveli Kasi Visalakshi. Goddess Kamakshi sits here in a rare seated yoga posture. Adi Shankaracharya is said to have installed the Sri Chakra here after pacifying the Goddess’s fierce form.
  • Ekambareswarar Temple — One of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams (Prithvi/Earth); dedicated to Lord Shiva. The mango tree inside the complex is said to be 3,500 years old.

How to reach: Cab from Tirupati (2.5–3 hours, NH16 via Chittoor or Chennai route). State buses available but change required.

18. Sripuram Golden Temple – Vellore

Distance from Tirupati: ~160 km | Timings: 8 AM – 8 PM

The Sripuram temple in Vellore is unlike anything else you’ll see. The entire path to the sanctum (about 1.8 km) is covered in pure gold sheeting — over 1,500 kg of gold on the exterior structures. The presiding deity is Goddess Mahalakshmi. The complex is immaculately maintained by the Sri Narayani Peedam trust and entry is free. The walk through the golden pathway, particularly in the evening light, is genuinely breathtaking. It does attract large crowds on weekends — try to go on a weekday morning for a peaceful visit.

How to reach: Train from Tirupati to Katpadi (Vellore) — about 2 hours, good frequency. Cab (₹2,000–2,500). Sripuram is 6 km from Vellore town; auto/cab from Katpadi junction.

19. Arunachaleswarar Temple – Tiruvannamalai

Distance from Tirupati: ~210 km | Timings: 5:30 AM – 9 PM

One of the most powerful Shaivite temples in India and another Pancha Bhoota Sthalam — this one representing Agni (fire). The presiding deity is Lord Shiva as Arunachaleswarar, with Goddess Unnamalai (Apeetakuchambal) as the consort. The hill behind the temple — Arunachala — is itself considered a manifestation of Shiva, and the 14 km Girivalam (circumambulation) around it is done by thousands every full moon night. The temple’s Karthigai Deepam festival, when a massive flame is lit on top of the hill, draws over a million pilgrims. Even outside festival times, the scale and sanctity of this temple make it worth the 3.5 hour drive.

How to reach: Cab from Tirupati (3.5 hours via Vellore–Polur route). State buses available with change at Vellore or Villupuram. Nearest railway station: Tiruvannamalai (limited trains); Villupuram is the better rail option.
