Sri Lakshman Ji Temple – Where Lakshman cut the nose of Surpanaka

Sri Lakshman Ji Temple is near the Tapovan area. This is the exact spot where Lakshman cut the nose of Surpanaka, the sister of demon Ravana. Nashik means “nose”, and thus this city got its name. This is the only Temple in the world dedicated to Lakshman Ji.

This is also the place where Lakshman performed tapasya to kill Ravana’s son Meghnath (Indrajit). That is why this place is known as Tapovana.

why Lakshmana cut Surpanaka’s nose?

Surpanakha got attracted by Lord Ram’s beauty and decided to propose him. She has the ability to change her shape, and uses it to seduce Lord Ram. But Lord Ram rejected her proposal as he only loved Sita.

Surpanakha became angry and tried to kill Sita then Lakshman sprang into action and cut Surpanakha’s nose with sword. He did so because it is the duty of a brother to protect his brother’s wife.
