History and Significance

Sri Govindaraja Swamy Temple is one of the oldest Vaishnava temples in South India. Saint Ramanujacharya consecrated the temple in 1130 AD. Built in the Dravidian architectural style, the imposing multi-tiered gopuram is visible from a distance and is the most recognized landmark of Tirupati town.

The principal deity is Lord Govindaraja (Lord Vishnu) in Sayana (reclining) posture — one of the rarest forms of Vishnu worship. The Sayana posture represents the cosmic sleep of Vishnu (Yoga Nidra), similar to the famous Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. This makes Govindaraja Swamy Temple uniquely significant among TTD-managed temples.

Shrines Inside the Temple Complex

  • Main Sanctum – Lord Govindaraja in reclining Sayana posture
  • Parthasarathy Shrine – Lord Krishna as charioteer of Arjuna (from Mahabharata)
  • Godadevi Aandal Shrine – dedicated to Andal (Goda Devi), the revered Alvar saint
  • Pundarikavalli Shrine
