Kanchi Kamakshi Temple History

Kamakshi Temple Legend

At first she was Ugra Kamakshi  because of her anger descent from the heavens following her suicide during Daksha’s yagna. She was fiery, having absorbed energies of all deities to revive the love god. Manmadha, who was reduced to ashes by an enraged Shiva. Her fierce unbearable temperature could be felt outside the walls of her shrine.

Adi Sankara, the 8th-century Vedic scholar and saint, drew her fury into the Sri Chakra, a pentagram with 43 triangles, extracting a promise that she would under no circumstances leave the temple without asking him initial. To this day no procession of the goddess leaves the temple before pausing at the shrine of Adi Sankara. He also changed the worship of Kamakshi from fierce tantric rites to a gentle Vedic form, so that the deity acquired her present benign aura.
