Sri Avanakshamma Temple, located in Narayanavanam, Andhra Pradesh, is a sacred site with a rich history and spiritual significance. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Avanakshamma, believed to be a form of Goddess Parvati. The temple attracts devotees seeking blessings for marriage, children, and overall prosperity.
The temple has a fascinating history that spans over 3,000 years. According to legend, Goddess Parvati defeated the demon Somakasura, who had stolen the Vedas from Lord Brahma. After retrieving the Vedas, the goddess took the form of a Swayambhu idol at Narayanavanam. Lord Brahma installed and worshipped this idol, naming her “Amna Yakshi,” which later evolved into “Avanakshamma.”
The temple was later expanded by Sage Agasthya and King Akasaraju, who installed a larger idol resembling the original Swayambhu form. The temple has been maintained by various rulers, including the Karvetinagar Suryavanshi dynasty, and came under the management of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) in 1967.
Padmavathi Devi, born as a divine blessing from Goddess Avanakshamma to the Akasaraju family after many years, shared a deep spiritual connection with the Goddess. During her childhood, she would often pray to the Goddess alongside her father. It was to Goddess Avanakshamma that Padmavathi Devi revealed her devotion and love for Lord Srinivasa. After their engagement, both Padmavathi Devi and Lord Srinivasa offered prayers at this sacred temple. On the day of their wedding, Padmavathi Devi performed the Gowri Pooja. Before departing for Tirumala, the divine couple once again prayed at the temple, seeking blessings for their journey and union.
