Tirumala is a very special place for many people who come to pray to Lord Venkateswara. But did you know there is a guardian who protects this holy place? This guardian is called the Kshetrapalaka.

Who is Kshetrapalaka?

Kshetrapalaka means “the guardian of the place.” In Tirumala, this guardian is Lord Shiva. He keeps the temple safe and makes sure everything is peaceful. People believe that Lord Shiva, as Kshetrapalaka, watches over the temple day and night.

The Legend of Kshetrapala Sila

A long time ago, there was a big rock called Kshetrapala Sila in the temple. This rock was believed to be the form of the guardian deity. It was said to move around the temple at night, protecting it from any harm. Priests would touch this rock with the temple keys after closing the doors at night and before opening them in the morning. This was to ask for the guardian’s blessings.

Devotees, or people who come to pray, often pay respect to Kshetrapalaka before entering the main temple. This shows how important the guardian is in keeping the temple holy and safe.

Today, the Kshetrapala Sila is kept near the Gogarbham dam in Tirumala. But the guardian’s spirit is still very much alive. The belief in Kshetrapalaka continues to be a big part of the temple’s traditions and helps keep the temple safe and peaceful.

Special Rudra Puja on Maha Shivaratri

Every year TTD performs special abhishekam to Kshetrapalaka Rudra on Maha  Sivaratri.

A team of temple staff including Archakas will reach Kshetrapalaka Rudra and perform Abhishekam with milk, curd, sandal paste, panneeru, coconut water.

After offering Neivedyam, they distribute prasadams to devotees and return to the temple.
