Mahanandi History

Mahanandi is near Srisailam. In the past, a devotee named Nandi pleased Lord Siva with his penance and got the boon that the region should be named Nandi mandala where the Lord should manifest in his name. The Lord fulfilled his desire and manifested as Maha Nandiswara alongwith Parvati as Kameswari. Since there are nine nandis around this shrine, it is known as Nava Nandi shrine and Nandi Mandala. Thousands of devotees visit the temple during Brahmotsavas of Mahasivaratri as well as daily rituals.
