Sri Guruvayur Temple maintains a unique elephant sanctuary, the only one of its kind in the world and an incredibly captivating place. Punnathur Kotta is 5 km from Guruvayur temple and has about 65 elephants that serve Sri Guruvayoorappan. These elephants are the offerings of the devotees to the Lord. A large number of pilgrims and visit this fascinating spot every day. Punnathur is the ancient palace of the Punnathur Rajas, now in the possession of the Temple. It is a 10 acre compound which Temple purchased in 1975. All the elephants were shifted to the Punnathur in a grant procession lead by Gajarajan Kesavan. It is a delightful and unforgettable experience to visit Punnathur and listen to the stories of Lord Krishna’s elephants from mahouts.
